Roman Egypt

A visit to Mons Claudianus in 1986

This is a mix of images of Mons Claudianus taken during a tour of Egypt which took us from Cairo, down the red sea coast then to Hurghadha, on to Mons Claudianus then, having joined the Nile, on through Luxor and down to Aswan.

When we did this tour, Egypt was easy to travel round, Minya was known as being a fundamentalist town, and one to pass through quickly and with little flesh showing, but there was no fear of attack. To an extent I would say that I felt safer in Egypt then than I do in the UK now.

The images below were all taken as slides and the colour can be assumed to be fairly accurate. They cover four main areas. The centurions house, this is actually a term that I have used solely to describe the house or manse on the hill overlooking the settlement. I expect it housed a far greater figure than a centurian. The Hydreum which is the bath house at a small distance, the quarry and the general views of Mons Claudianus.

I have left these seperate to the other images - though I should have a better organised and complete set of thumbnails leading to the main images. For those experts in Mons who note that I have incorrectly named or located any image - please tell me. These were taken 15 years ago at the time of writing - wow, that long ago - and I am sure I have forgotten the exact locations and possibly I might have inverted the odd image!!

The centurians house, or manse. This was clearly an oppulent property overlooking the main settlement a

Views within the settlement, First the main town with small close packed houses and ally-ways, then across to the barracks. Note the use of rough stone - I always found that strange when this was a community of masons. Perhaps consider the close links between the 'Masons' and Egypt.

The Hydreum was placed some distance, about 1/2 kilometre from the main settlement. It is well preserved and has the clay or mud facing on the walls - perhaps the rest of Mons Claudianus was faced in this manner.

These are general views of the quarry area and then on to the broad views of the settlement itself. I will change the file names to more descriptive descriptions as time goes by.
