All the tracks which
can be seen above are largelystill in place from Roman times, they are well
worn - about once a week - but realistically need a 4x4 to travers them. Not
for the extra traction but for the ground clearance. The Locals use the standard
toyota or similar pickups and seldom get stuck. Last time we visited Mons
we picked up a local lad who had just been dropped off by a lorry and was
on his way to his village near Mons Claud. Very pleasent lad, we didn't have
any room on the inside but he was more than happy to stand on the running
board (side steps) and hold on to the wing mirror - it saved him a 10 mile
walk through the desert! Common humanity aside, it pays to help as you in
turn might need help and it is their desert.
