Roman Egypt

My other web sites

Mainly photos from various trips to many Roman sites within Egypt.

A largely forgotten area as Egypt is so chock full of ancient remains that the Roman stuff tends to get overlooked.

Many images of Mons Claudianus a favourite site stuck out in the eastern desert, Pelusium, in the Northern part of the Sinai, a very famous but seldom noted Roman city.

Perhaps my favourite site in Egypt is Serabit Al Kadem - nothing to do with Rome, but a temple to Hathor, isolated and standing proud on the top of a mountain, accesible only by scaling a sheer cliff (or going the other way which is through the local Bedou camp site).

A great description of Mons Claudianus from 'British Archaeology'

NB The 1986 images are the best but are quite large, between 100KB and 200KB

Mons Claudianus is a quarry located in the Eastern Egyptian Desert. Accessable by 4x4 vehicles for the rugged or ordinary cars for those without a 4x4 - but take extra care.

Pelusium - Located in the North of the Sinai and fairly easily accessable. Used to be on the Nile until it changed course. Fairly major sea battle fought just North of here.
